The story of Sheena Mills

My family are fifth-generation rice farmers, originally from Punjab, India, who were tragically uprooted during the partition in 1947.

Our Grandparents, like so many others, were forced to leave behind everything they owned, taking only what they could carry, as they journeyed into an unknown future.

Punjab, Pakistan, became a new home for those fortunate enough to survive.

The partition of 1947 was a time of unimaginable upheaval, marked by violence, and heartbreak. Around 18million people were displaced with little warning. Families were torn apart, over a million lives were lost, and entire communities were forced to leave behind their homes, land, and livelihoods as the British Indian provinces were split in two along the still-contested Radcliffe line.

For those who endured, survival meant more than just escaping physical danger—it meant finding the strength to rebuild from nothing. It meant enduring the pain of separation from loved ones, the trauma of witnessing unimaginable horrors and sectarian violence, and the uncertainty of starting over in an unfamiliar land.

My family was among those who survived this harrowing period. Originally rice farmers from Jalandhar, in the Indian Punjab, they sought refuge in the newly formed Pakistan. Carrying little more than hope and resilience, they began to rebuild their lives. With unwavering determination, they turned to the only skill they had known for generations—farming.

It was through this connection to the land and their deep-rooted traditions that they found purpose and stability once again.

Their story is not just one of survival but of perseverance, courage, and an enduring bond with the soil that continues to sustain us to this day. At Sheena Mills, we honour their legacy with every crop we produce – our heritage is rooted deeply in the fertile lands of Punjab, spanning both sides of the border.
